Wedding choices

Scotland is the only country in the UK where there is no residency requirement to be fulfilled. Any two persons can marry in Scotland regardless of which country they live subject to meeting basic requirements. So a couple living in England can get married in Alloway without difficulty.

There are three marriage options to choose from:

Humanist weddings at Doonbank

Scotland is one of only six countries in the world where Humanist marriage ceremonies are legally conducted. Humanist weddings have the same legal status as civil and religious weddings as long as they are conducted by a Humanist Society of Scotland Celebrant.

Couples are free to marry wherever they choose, including beaches and mountains, hotels and the gardens of people's own homes, so you could hold a truly intimate wedding ceremony inside or in the grounds of the cottage, ending your special day with a romantic dinner overlooking the River Doon, or taking a short walk to the Brig a Doon Hotel for a special meal.

The Humanist society of Scotland website can provide lots of information about Humanist weddings and offers a directory of humanist celebrants. Celebrants are very happy to talk through the options open to couples planning a humanist ceremony.

Religious Ceremonies at Doonbank Cottage

Religious ceremonies may be conducted at any time and in any place in Scotland as long as you can get an authorised religious celebrant to attend and officiate. If you can find a minister and two witnesses to agree, you can have a religious marriage ceremony at Doonbank.

Alternatively, you could hold your wedding in Alloway Church, a lovely little church which is a short walk from the Doonbank.

Civil Ceremonies

Civil Ceremonies are conducted by authorised registrars, in approved places. If you wish to hold a civil wedding ceremony in Doonbank, you would need to contact South Ayrshire Council and enquire about the procedure for making an application for a Temporary Approval.

Alternatively, you could hold your civil wedding ceremony in one of South Ayrshire's approved venues, for example, Burns' Heritage Park is a short walk from the cottage and allows you to get married in Burns Cottage, on the romantic Brig O Doon, or in the impressive Burns' Monument or Brig O Doon Hotel, using Doonbank as a romantic base for the bride and groom.

Gilchrist Wedding photo at Doonbank Cottage

"What an experience. This cottage and garden have been part of a magical time. Our eldest daughter was married at St Quivox church and reception was at the Brig-O-Doon. We entertained our family and friends both before and after the wedding in Doonbank Cottage. The official photographer was delighted by the cottage and the gardens and took photographs on the lawn." May 2009 - The Gilchrist family.
